Aetna Member Story

Stability Through Consistent Behavioral Health Support
Brian*, an Aetna Better Health of Illinois member, was experiencing significant behavioral health challenges that led to multiple emergency room visits and hospitalizations in 2025. These repeated crises disrupted daily life and made it difficult to maintain stability and independence.
After being referred to intensive case management, Brian began working closely with Heath*, behavioral health care manager who provided regular check-ins and consistent support. Through this partnership, Brian re-engaged with outpatient counseling services, attended appointments consistently, and continued taking prescribed medications. Having a dependable point of contact helped Brian feel supported and less overwhelmed while navigating recovery.
Over time, Brian reported a noticeable decrease in symptoms and improved ability to manage daily activities independently. Since engaging in case management, Brian has not returned to the emergency room or required inpatient hospitalization. In November 2025, Brian successfully graduated from intensive case management, confident in the ability to manage behavioral health needs and utilize outpatient providers effectively.
Brian’s story demonstrates how steady care coordination and ongoing encouragement can reduce crisis-level care, strengthen self-management skills, and support long-term well-being.
