Aetna Member Story

Advocacy That Restored Access To Essential Medications

Sophia*, a 16-year-old Aetna Better Health of Illinois member living in an out-of-state residential treatment facility, faced serious barriers to accessing necessary medications. Coverage limitations meant her prescriptions were not being approved, forcing her family to pay more than $170 per month out of pocket—an expense that created significant financial strain and risked interrupting her treatment.

Kenya*, a dedicated case manager partnered with multiple stakeholders, including the residential facility, pharmacy, internal leadership, and medical directors, to identify a solution. Through persistent advocacy and collaboration, Kenya successfully secured a one-year medication override. This ensured uninterrupted access to Sophia’s medications at no cost to her family.

Resolving this issue did more than restore medication access—it helped rebuild trust with Sophia’s caregiver, who had previously disengaged due to financial stress and system barriers. Following the intervention, Sophia’s caregiver became actively involved in case management, allowing for more effective coordination and support. As a result of this collaboration, both the residential facility and pharmacy are now working toward becoming in-network providers, improving access and streamlining care for future members.

Sophia’s story reflects how coordinated support, and thoughtful advocacy can help members overcome coverage barriers, maintain access to essential care, and ease stress for families.
